First Timers Yoga: At a Glance

When Yoga was at its highest peak of becoming the hottest “trend” where everyone thought it was hip or cool to participate in, I personally was not a fan. I never understood the importance of lying on a mat doing different poses with your body especially since I was not flexible. I could never understand how someone could focus for an hour doing slow-paced motions. I did not realize the amount of skill, focus, mindset, and strength it took. Finally, after much resistance, I decided to give it a chance and took a class at a local yoga studio two blocks from my apartment.

After the hour-long of relaxation yoga, I was surprisingly rejuvenated. I felt how yoga could change your physical and mental capacity. It prepares your mind and body for a positive and a healthy mindset. Yoga encourages overall health and wellness. The instructor had a calming voice that allowed us to leave all the world’s chaos behind and truly just breath while achieving peace and tranquility. I know it sounds like I am just writing about complete bs but no I am not! There were of course moments where I lost focus, my mind drifted, and I started to think about other things. But this particular instructor somehow brought me back. I was able to tune into her voice, listen to my own breathing, and let my own voices fade further back. It’s a whole new lifestyle where stress is eliminated (even for that hour) and you can finally be a little more mindful.

Many people have taken a yoga class or two, but the key is finding the perfect one that works for your health and lifestyle needs. Some people like to build strength with power yoga, others like advanced yoga like hot yoga. Hot yoga is when the room is set to 100 degrees Fahrenheit eliminating all negativity and toxins in your body. There is also prenatal yoga for pregnant woman, relaxation yoga, and more. There are many different styles of yoga, so perhaps you haven’t found yours yet. The most unique benefit received from a yoga session will be from the one that best suits you and your physical as well as mental needs.

Yoga is a physical activity that can potentially suit all ages and body types. Whether you are 12, 21 or 65, you can still participate in yoga activities. Most studios have beginner sessions, and instructors who will go around and help those who are new to their class. Yoga has a place for everyone representing equality.

What kind of yoga will you be trying next?
