I learned early in life that some of the best decisions I have ever made were the ones I didn’t think about. Last year around this time was when I made one of those types of decisions.
I had decided to move out of my parent’s house. For months prior to my moving out I had begun to feel the pressure for freedom, and all the natural fears that could occur, did. It wasn’t until I had looked at a few places, and one in particular (that would inevitably become the one I live in now) that I had made the decision. I remember simply looking around the place and simply saying “Ok.”
At that moment I didn’t allow myself to think about the typical thoughts you have when moving out on your own like:
- how will I pay the rent?
- how will I pay for groceries?
- how much are groceries anyway?
- I don’t know how to live alone, how will I cook for myself?
- How will I afford furniture?
Paying for things was my biggest concern, but I knew I had to do this. That is another thing, anytime I have ever felt I had to do something, I knew it was the right decision. When there wasn’t any other alternative. When I give advice to friends who are torn about decision they need to make, or are riddled with fears, I simply tell them “don’t think, just do.” Worry about everything later if you must worry at all.
Now, let me be honest, some decisions do require some significant thought, so I am not telling you all to go crazy and not think at all before making a decision, but if your thoughts are inhibiting you from achieving your highest potential and taking that leap of faith, maybe you need to just close your eyes and jump!
This past year has been a challenging one for me, I have learned so many things about daily life and responsibility. I have grown up. I’ve learned that I enjoy cooking and how much I enjoy peace and quiet. If I hadn’t said “Ok” a year ago, I might still be living with my parents miserable and suffocated, and not growing into the person I am today.
I have to add that when you make one change in your life, even the smallest of changes, it is like a domino effect, leading to other changes that will allow you to reach the person you are meant to be. So I recommend, don’t think – just do. The best decisions are the ones we don’t think about! Everything will fall into place and I promise you will definitely radiate from it!
