If you are anything like me, the sound of your morning alarm is dreadful and you wish there was an extra hour on the clock before having to drag yourself out of bed. Growing up, my sister would try everything in her power to wake me up. I would hit snooze several times.
Soon enough, I learned that there is hope to making those early hours less daunting and more productive, which will set the rest of your day up for success. Here are five tips to start your day the right way.
First things first, start your morning the night before.
Save yourself time and energy the next morning, by preparing the night before. Pack your work and gym bag, make lunch for the following morning and pick out your outfit (for the ladies who can never decide what to wear, this is definitely a must.) These quick tasks save thirty minutes the following morning leaving more room for the most important meal of your productive day, which leads me to our next tip.
Have a balanced breakfast.
Whether you love eggs, avocado toast, oatmeal or fruit, make sure to have protein-filled breakfast and make this a top priority. Having the most important meal of the day ensures that you will feel less tired and full of energy to make the most of your morning. Also, your stomach will make it until lunch without growling at your 10am office meeting.
Work Out
Many people tend to work out before work or afterwards. I have yet to get in the full swing of working out in the morning. However, when I do…it works wonders. I feel optimistic after a tough workout that allows me to feel that I can take on anything. I also am a firm believer that you do not need a sixty minute intense interval workout to jet start your day. I believe that even fifteen minutes of yoga, stretching or a mini workout with a few dumbbells can do the trick to wake up feeling fabulous.
Lose the habit of the Snooze button
This was definitely the most tough for me. We all love those extra minutes in our cozy, almost cloud like bed. However, how warm and comfortable your blankets are….the snooze button actually is a poor habit for your health. The repeated act of ‘snoozing’ disrupts the rem cycle and your body needs to avoid this habit in order to reap the full benefits of sleep.
A glass of hot lemon water
Your body needs plenty of water to stay hydrated and complete a day’s worth of work. We all sleep six to nine hours a night, (or we would like to believe) which means our body becomes dehydrated. Wake up with a warm or hot glass water with lemon before eating anything else. This will help with flushing the digestive system. Your body is constantly active during sleep and the morning is the perfect time to restore and rehydrate. Also, on an aesthetic side…your skin will thank you later
If you are not an early morning fan, try these few tips out with an optimistic can-do attitude. I am positive that you will feel healthy, different and more productive.
