They Say You Can’t Have it All, But Can You?

Balance is a B*tch. It takes effort, and lots of time management to work. Truth. And when it comes to wanting all the things you want in life, sometimes sacrifice happens, or things falter at times. According to this Inc article Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends: Pick 3 — You can’t have it all. You have to choose your priorities and pick what matters more. Some things fall off the priority list at times, and you can pick them up later in life.

I agree to disagree.

I’ve always been a proponent of balance in life. Ensuring we find ways to strive for work/life balance and find the things in life that make us happy outside of work. Whether that’s fitness, our families, hobbies, etc. I’ve always been pretty good at it, with my blogging, time with friends, and sometimes, always found time for everything. Then I moved to NYC, and somehow my balance was a little lop-sided.

I was struggling. And then I read that article referenced above, and I became a tad frustrated. I was told even by friends I should choose what I wanted to focus on, and let go of some of the things I had on my plate. I kept saying, “but why.”

Why can’t I try to do it all?

Instead of listening to the naysayers, I listened to myself.

The article was right that we do need to prioritize. That prioritization can help find levels of balance, which is what I strive for now.

I have 3 top level priorities that reign supreme overall. For instance two of these are definitely work and health/fitness for me.

Then I have 6 sub level priorities that go up and down in priority based on the week, but each have some presence each month (even if it’s minimal that month). For instance my blogging and seeing friends depend upon the week. Sometimes work is too crazy to make plans during the week, and I need push plans to the following week. Hence the level of priorities, but I am still ensuring each month I see the people that matter, and get my balance of work, fitness, friends, etc.

Balance may not be the same or as easy as it used to be, but it’s still achievable. It just has a different look now.
